Baby Brain - Exploring Motherhood Through Photography

An ongoing art practice exploring the realities of motherhood beyond the curated family feeds and filtered images that dominate our screens. Baby Brain creates intimate portraits of mothers in transition—honest, unpolished, powerful images that document the archetypal transformation of becoming a parent.

This project combines authentic portrait photography with community engagement and somatic techniques, creating space for mothers to explore their changing identity through image-making. Supported by NCT Malvern, the work researches the experiences of a diverse group of women and explores the benefits of creating portraits with mothers to help them navigate and process profound change.

Working collaboratively with participants, I use somatic coaching approaches within portrait sessions, helping mothers feel present in their bodies and comfortable expressing themselves authentically. The resulting portraits are both documentation of this research and compelling works of art that challenge conventional representations of motherhood.

Recent developments:

  • Featured in RBSA Photography Exhibition, 2025

  • Supported by NCT Malvern to research diverse maternal experiences

  • Developing therapeutic approaches combining photography and somatic practices

  • Seeking Arts Council funding to expand research and reach wider audiences in 2026

Baby Brain stands as a counter-narrative to the image-consuming, social media-led, AI-generated visual culture—insisting on real bodies, real emotions, real stories.
